SHOKALSKIY: Approaching Cape Adare
We’re into our third day at sea as we make our way to Cape Adare. We were all excited to see our first iceberg yesterday, at around 6:00pm. It was estimated at 400m long and 40m above the water and was an impressive sight. The winner of the guess the date and time of the first spotted iceberg competition was Wendy Taylor who guessed 18:30 and the first ice berg was spotted at 18:11.
Today, just before noon, we passed into the Antarctic Circle. We’ve been enjoying lectures about the history and exploration of the Ross Sea area as well as a number of documentaries. Wildlife sightings in recent days have included the Cape Petrel, Hour Glass Dolphin and a number of pelagic birds. Today the swell has been quite big, so it has allowed some time to sort out photos and personal journals of the trip so far. We look forward to sighting land tomorrow.
