Exploring Enderby
I have said it before and I will say it again, Enderby Island never disappoints. Our visit yesterday was no exception. After a reasonably comfortable trip from the Snares it was great to get into the sheltered waters of Port Ross. The day dawned relatively calm and clear and the forecast was for light winds throughout the day so everybody went ashore. Quite a large contingent chose to walk what is arguably one of the “greatest nature walks in the world”, right around the north of the island, while the remainder chose a shorter option. At some stage everybody spent time watching the sex and violence which would rival any soap opera in the breeding colony of New Zealand Sea Lions on Sandy Bay Beach.
Rata Forest in full bloom
Contrary to the forecast, the wind did increase in the late afternoon/early evening but it didn’t prevent a small group from going ashore to visit the remains of one of the old World War II Coastwatchers huts.
