A reduction in seabird bycatch in any fishery is a good thing. Being proactive and educating is one step better. We are pleased that the wildlife around the Kamchatka Peninsula - Sea of Okhotsk and the Western Bering Sea - will benefit from World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) efforts and expertise as outlined in this article.
The area is rich in marine life and failry pristine as it has been largely isolated from the rest of the world until recently, and the idea of 'sustainable fishing' is relatively new. Other creeping threats on the marine ecosystem such as oil and gas drilling, mining and market fishing make this intervention timely.
