Nimrod leaves England
On 6th August 'Nimrod' touched at Torquay as her final port before departure south to the Antarctci and the commencement of British Antarctic Expedition. Shackleton gave a dinner for the captain and crew. Next day 'Nimrod' weighed anchors and at last sailed away from England.
The rush and bustle was over and the long days south commenced.
In Torquay they are raising a toast to Sir Ernest Shackleton and 'Nimrod' at the Torbay Hotel whilst in New Zealand we are preparing to celebrate his departure from Lyttelton on 1st January 1908 with a Centennial re-enactment celebration on 1st January 2008 at 4pm, exactly 100 years to the minute.
