Exploring Chichijima Island

Our Western and Grand Pacific Odyssey adventure continued as we journeyed towards the island of Chichijima, off the coast of Japan. At dawn, with winds howling, the birders were out on the decks and rewarded with an almost continuous stream of Tristram's Storm-petrels passing Heritage Adventurer. They were presumably leaving the southernmost islands of the Ogasawara/Bonin Island Chain to our west. As we sailed north, several Black-footed Albatrosses were seen gliding effortlessly on the winds.

As we sailed into the volcanic harbour of Chichijima, a welcoming committee of two—a mother and calf Humpback Whale—greeted us. The calf was particularly enthusiastic, showing off with a full breach while the mother waited nearby. Then after expert manoeuvring by our Captain, we docked successfully, and immigration could take place as we were now in Japanese territory.

When the all-clear was given the exploration could begin! Some went and explored the nearby shops and aquarium, whereas others headed up the hill to find some of the birds that inhabit this area. Blue Rock Thrush, Warbling White-eye, Japanese Bush Warbler, Brown-eared Bulbul, and the highlight, the Black Wood Pigeon were all observed. These forests were not only laden with birds but also host to several endemic plant species such as the Pandanus boninensis. Moving between a shrine and several rocky lookout points, we admired the beautiful views of Chichijima.

Eventually, our stomachs reminded us that it was time for lunch, and we returned to Heritage Adventurer. As we sailed to our next destination, Humpback Whales again provided some spectacular views for everyone on board.
