Experiencing the islands of the Chuuk Lagoon

Our adventure in Micronesia continued at Chuuk Lagoon, where we would explore the abundant tropical islands. The birders set off first and had three options to choose from.

Option one was to join Frank for some more local birding around Weno Island, where the group re-connected with birds from yesterday and added the Blue-faced Parrotfinch.

Option two was a Zodiac cruise to Tonowas Island with Niall & Phil, which was highly fruitful. Adding the sort after Chuuk Monarch, Yellow Bittern and Blue-faced Parrotfinch to our birding list.

Option three was joining Chris & Matt by Zodiac to Tol Island. We arrived at this remote location and were greeted by friendly locals, who helped us climb the very steep forest-covered mountain. After a difficult walk, the group were rewarded by seeing our two main targets, the Chuuk Monarch and the Teardrop White-eye.

Those not birding headed for an exciting Zodiac cruise to Dublon Island. We arrived at the local resort and were greeted by friendly locals who welcomed us to their slice of paradise.

We boarded the best available transport, the back of a truck, and drove to the old Japanese School, where locals were taught Japanese to prepare them for work during their time on the islands in WWII. Afterwards, we headed to the old Communication Center which had been converted to a school! As it was a normal school day, the kids were having class, and some played outside. This was a great stop and the interaction with the kids was amazing!

We visited the remains of the old hospital, which was surrounded by the forest, and explored the ruins of what was once a bustling medical centre.

To end the day, we enjoyed a quick swim and savoured fresh coconuts, before visiting the oldest church in the island group. What a beautiful building! With a name fit for what we have seen, and to end a tour in history drenched in warfare, Kinamwe, meaning peace.
