Continuing our intrepid journey – Crossing the Equator

Crossing the Equator on the Western and Grand Pacific Odyssey is unavoidable, although participation in the celebration of the crossing isn't obligatory. Fortunately, Heritage Adventurer crossed the imaginary line during daylight, at about 0900 on 7th April, or 00.00hrs GMT.

Our very own Neptune, armed with a trident and disguised, but rather easily identified by his unmistakable Lancashire accent, oversaw the traditional celebration for first-timers (Pollywogs) who cross zero degrees of latitude by sea to become full-fledged Shellbacks. By his side, an extremely well-disguised bird guide, wearing a dress that allegedly belonged to our intrepid Cruise Manager, played the part of a (tailless) mermaid.

After drinking punch or champagne, those who'd never crossed the Equator by boat were ushered by Neptune towards the ship's swimming pool. The swell caused the swimming pool to create its own waves, but those in the pool clearly had great fun.

During the day, even though we were crossing a renowned 'dead zone' for birds, those on deck found a surprising number of Leach's and a few Band-rumped Storm-petrels. Occasionally a Red-footed Booby swooped through the sky to chase flying fish scattering in front of Heritage Adventurer.

At the same time, guests enjoyed a variety of activities on board including a film, lectures and a photography workshop. And as always, we were treated to a wonderful selection of delicious meals.
