A day on Miyake-jima Island

This morning, we arrived alongside the rising sun at 0500 at Miyake-jima Island. Some keen birders were already on the observation deck watching the sky. It started slowly, but we were rewarded with great observations of Short-tailed Shearwaters, the occasional Skua and Leach's Storm Petrel. At around 0900, the number of birds started to increase. The majestic Black-footed Albatross made appearances, Streaked Shearwaters appeared in large numbers, and stunning Pomarine Skuas made some very close flybys in full breeding plumage. Long-tailed Skuas were also observed as we finally made it to our destination.

Those not birding enjoyed a sleep-in, before a Zodiac cruise to the shelter of Miyake-jima Island’s harbour. Upon arrival, we were met by a welcome party of friendly locals and officials. Departing in a bus, our first stop was the Ako Village hot spring lava walk, where we traversed a moonscape of volcanic rocks. We carried along the coast, watching the bright blue water crash against the ragged coastline and rush through numerous arches. The winding, quiet roads led us to our next stop, Toga Shrine. Carved lions, delicate flowers, and a peaceful air surrounded this place and settled over all of us.

The birders disembarked at the island and boarded the bus to a wonderful forest where we observed a range of birds singing as they hid in the canopy. However, once we had some time to relax, the birds began to appear, and everyone had great observations of the Japanese Robin and Owston’s Tit. The Japanese Bush Warbler and the Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker were also stunning to see feeding and singing in the forest.

To finish our incredible Grand and Western Pacific Odyssey adventure, we enjoyed the Captain's Farewell and final supper. Then a highlight of the night, the voyage slideshow prepared by our incredible photographer Cathy Finch.
