Wrangel Island Awaits
Our first Wrangel Island Expedition of 2014 enjoyed reasonable weather conditions as we got underway from the Port of Anadyr a couple of days ago. After their flights had landed, participants had time to explore the town before boarding barges to be transferred to the Spirit of Enderby which lay at anchor in the harbour. Once formalities were completed we sailed for Preobrazheniya Bay. The following morning we spent an interesting couple of hours Zodiac cruising some spectacular bird cliffs before making a landing for a walk in the tundra. Overnight we sailed to Yttyran Island, the site of infamous 'Whale Bone Alley', an Eskimo archaeological site dating to the 14th Century, dominated by the massive jaw bones and skulls from many whales butchered here.
