Wolverine Sighting

This is the penultimate day of this expedition and we are cruising across Anadyr Bay to rendezvous with the Pilot who will take us up the Anadyr River to our mooring early tomorrow morning. We have enjoyed wonderful weather over the last couple days as we sailed into Kolyuchin Inlet on the Siberian Coast and made a landing. In early spring this is one of the key breeding sites in Siberia for migratory waterfowl and waders and there were still quite a few around. Highlights included three species of Loons and Emperor Geese, but the most excitement was generated by the sighting of a Wolverine. These animals have huge home ranges and are consequently low density so we were very lucky to encounter one. Yesterday morning we visited the Diomede Islands in near perfect conditions. These small islands in the centre of the Bering Strait lie just a short distance apart on either side of the International Date Line and are perhaps more significant as the political boundary between Russia and the USA.
