Tagua Bay

In the morning the group took a walk in Tagua Bay through mossed and lichen-covered Rata and Dracophyllum forest to the wartime coast-watchers hut. The men’s playing cards and work instructions are still on the bench.

During lunch, we steamed up the island’s east coast to Port Ross and landed at Hardwick, the “seat of European civilisation” in the Auckland Islands. Now the settlement has only poignant relics – a graveyard, finger-posts and store sheds for castaways, and the traces of a paved road through the Rata forest.
