Snow Geese Gather

We made a 6am start for our last landing on Wrangel Island this morning.  The lighting on the tundra was truly magical, turning it to a burnished gold, and snow dusted the mountain tops as clouds from building westerly winds rolled through the mountain passes. Snow Geese provided the highlight today. They breed in big numbers here on Wrangel and now that breeding has finished for the season, huge flocks are gathering on the south coast as they prepare to migrate to the USA.

Sadly it was time to say goodbye to the island and an incredible five days. As always many have been particularly touched by the island experience which is unparalleled in the world of expedition travel. The lucky few who had completed the Overland Expedition (only 10 can take part on each expedition) will testify to the fact that although there is life after Wrangel, part of Wrangel travels with you forever.

We are south-bound now with a good travelling wind just aft of the beam and expect to be in Kolyuchin Inlet shortly after breakfast tomorrow morning.
