Ross Ice Shelf

We are on a roll at the moment. We woke to another simply amazing day today with blue sky and no wind for the third day in a row. I downloaded a weather forecast a short while ago and it looks like our luck might be running out as there is a change coming, so we will make the most of it.

Our visit to the Ross Ice Shelf last night was spectacular - calm and clear with great views of Cape Crozier. (We were reminded again of Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s Book “The Worst Journey in the World”. If you haven’t read it, you should!)  We spotted a good number of Minke Whales and a few Orcas working the front of the ice shelf.

This morning we had an early breakfast and went ashore to a huge Adelie Penguin colony on Franklin Island - another opportunity for penguin photos. People are starting to put their cameras down and just observe, which is great to see. As I write this we are underway to Terra Nova Bay where we have a number of landings planned before continuing our journey north.
