Photographer of the Year Blog

Temperatures are hot and humid, as you'd expect at this time of year, yet the avid 'Birders' endure all, with long hours on deck, scoping the horizon and surrounding sea, in search of their quarry. One has to admire their dedication and enthusiasm. From first light every morning till the last rays of sun, these keen people ply the decks every day, armed with binoculars, cameras and reference books. They are on the lookout for as many species as possible, particularly rare varieties, and faithfully record what is out there on any given day.

Although my knowledge of birds is clearly lacking, this trip has taught me a lot. It has been invigorating to experience first hand the wonders of nature at sea. Watching Masked Boobys swooping in to take a flying fish on the wing is a sight to behold!

Masked Booby

This trip with Heritage Expeditions has been fanatastic, the service first class and with knowledgeable staff on hand at all times. The food as well has been great, every meal being different.
