Lavrentiya Visit

Today was one of those expedition days when all the stars aligned and the gods smiled, blessing our endeavours. The fog rolled off the hills and the sun shone as we anchored in the morning off the town of Lavrentiya. We enjoyed the generous hospitality of the local people who treated us to traditional foods as they performed some of their traditional music and dances. They were the perfect hosts and it was sad to leave.

In the afternoon we arrived at Cape Dezhnev (the most north-easterly point of the Eurasian continent and the western coast of the Bering Strait). Weather and sea conditions are generally marginal here but today the sea was calm and the sun shone brightly. We went ashore and spent several hours exploring the area which includes the relics of the now abandoned Eskimo village of Naukan. As I write this we are underway to Kolyuchin Island.
