Journey's End

Every journey eventually comes to an end and for this group tomorrow is that day. Although we are about to go our separate ways, the memories and inspiration from this adventure will last forever. Our last session in the bar before dinner went on longer than usual with impromptu and organised performances from many in the group. There were laughs a plenty, an indication of the number of solid friendships that have been established as we all lived in the same home for 30 days. The evening was preceded with a disembarkation briefing and the world premiere of the expedition picture show, a 25 minute production of spectacular images and action shots from the many adventures we had experienced. We reminisced about Macca and those farting, burping Elephant Seals that now seemed a long time ago! Anchored up behind Stewart Island for the day gave us a relaxed time and strange views of green things onshore – yes folks, civilisation is just over the horizon. One last fantastic dinner sent us all over the edge. We were full of more than just food. This had been one of those special expeditions when you get to tick nearly all the boxes. We have seen Antarctica at its very best and will all now be involved with her for the rest of our lives. Tomorrow the Pilot will come aboard at 0630hrs as we steam back into Bluff where it all began. It will surely be a time of mixed emotions, but no doubt the happy will outweigh the sad. This was just 30 days out of a whole lifetime, but this is what life is all about!
