Heard Island Revisited

Yesterday we sailed out for a closer look at McDonald Island some 30 miles to the west of Heard Island and then spent last night anchored in Atlas Cove. Today we made another landing there in overcast conditions with strong westerly wnds. We enjoyed more walks and more wildlife before sadly steaming away, bound for Albany in Western Australia, over 2,000 miles and another world away.

Although we didn't make all the landings we intended, we achieved what we came to do. We saw the mountain and all the wildlife that calls Heard Island home and we have all taken away a greater appreciation of and respect for this amazing landmass.  It was beyond special, even on my second visit, and I certainly hope to call there again some day.
