Expedition Mesmerised by Northern Lights in the Russian Arctic

We have made to Wrangel Island, and this is our last visit for this season.  It is September and autumn is fast approaching. There has been some big changes in the landscape since we were last here, the tundra has changed colour, there are vibrant reds and yellows where there had been greens. There are a lot less snow geese, with the majority already headed south and the waders or shore birds that are left are mostly in eclipse plumage.  We are also experiencing some darkness at night and with that comes the potential of the northern lights or Aurora Borealis.  Two nights ago as we were approaching Wrangel Island we were treated to the most spectacular display of northern lights. For over two hours we were mesmerised and stood in awe and wonder as the night sky was filled with natures greatest stage show - words and the many photographs taken are evidence of our experience but certainly seeing the Aurora Borealis with ones own eyes is far richer.
