Egvekinot Day
It’s Monday evening and we are just departing the Port of Egvekinot, at the head of Kresta Bay on our way south on the ‘Jewel of the Russian Far East’ itinerary. We have been tied alongside all day, topping up our water tanks with some really good clean fresh mountain water. During the day our expeditioners took the opportunity to visit the museum and explore the town and surrounding area as far north as the Arctic Circle, 24 kms north of the centre. The town was constructed in 1946 as a Gulag Camp where prisoners built not only the town but also a 200km road to the tin mine at Iultin. Nowadays Egvekinot is an important administration centre for the region and the terminus for new mining ventures and a network of winter roads which service much of this part of Chukotka.
