Dream Run to Campbell

We arrived at Campbell Island in the early hours of this morning after what can only be described as a 'dream run' from the Balleny Islands. The wind didn’t exceed 15 kts and although the swell was up to 4 metres at times it wasn’t particularly uncomfortable. This morning dawned calm at Campbell and the harbour was like a mill pond with clear blue skies as far as the eye could see. From here it is hard to imagine the storm that is currently buffeting the South Island of New Zealand.

Expeditioners split into two groups today. One walked to NW Bay while the others took a Zodiac cruise of the upper harbour exploring many of the historic sites and then climbed to Col Lyall to view the Southern Royal Albatross. Everyone enjoyed the amazing wildlife which included seeing numerous Snipe, Teal, Antipodean Wandering Albatross and of course the Southern Royal Albatross, all of which are on chicks at the moment.

This evening the cloud has come right down to the sea but it is still mild and there is still no wind. It will be interesting to see what the morning brings but one thing is sure, regardless of the weather it will be a great day as Campbell Island never disappoints!
