Deep in the Ross Sea

Jan 27th – Thousands of Adele penguins greeted us this morning early as we landed at Franklin Island on a cloudy day.  We had ample amount of time to roam the flat beach area observing colonies of penguins, as well as the spattering of Weddell Seals taking a rest on the beach. The fluffy Adele chicks were entertaining as they chased parents for food. Feathers were flying in the air like snow with the older chicks still moulting. We pulled up anchor and headed our furthest south to 77º25,3’S 169º48,7’E. After a delicious dinner of New Zealand rack of lamb and chocolate fondant, we had after dinner views the Ross Ice Shelf.

Jan 28th – We woke up to morning views of Mt. Erebus and Mt. Terror on Ross Island. Due to the unusual ice conditions this season, we were blocked from getting into McMurdo Sound as it was still surrounded by miles of ice. Instead, we proceeded back north along the ice edge past Beaufort Island while watching for wildlife. We spotted some Orca and Minke Whales along the ice edge as well as a number of schools of penguins gliding along in the water. A beautiful day to cruise the Ross Sea.
