Chatham Archipelago

Pyramid Rock

We were blessed with a magnificent sunny day as we made our way towards the distinctive feature of Pyramid Rock. During the morning we did some ‘chumming’, attracting hundreds of Salvins, Chatham Islands, Bullers, Black-browed, Northern Royal and Southern Royal Albatross close to the ship.
Pyramid Rock was drenched in sunlight as we circumnavigated it by ship, long lenses focussed on the prolific wildlife it supports. New Zealand Fur Seals relaxed amongst the rocks at the foot of the cray pot surrounded monolith, while albatross and terns surveyed from above. After lunch we took the Zodiacs for a closer look at South East Island and saw Pitt Island Shag and Shore Plovers. There were some sun-burnt faces by evening but most felt it worth the discomfort.
