Campbell Island Capers

Our day at Campbell Island was another one to write home about.  We woke to windy conditions with passing showers but by the end of the morning there were patches of blue sky and we all had great views of the Campbell Island Teal.  Most expeditioners enjoyed a Zodiac cruise around Perserverance Harbour while a hardy few made the trek to NW Bay.  Many Hooker’s Sea Lions and Elephant Seals accompanied us in the water as we spotted several Campbell Shags and five Teal.  In the afternoon the group went up to Col Lyall in clear and unusually still conditions and encountered several Southern Royal Albatross preparing nests for the season. As we lay quietly amongst the tussock a few small groups were gamming amongst us. It was a magical to be so close to these majestic birds and difficult to tear ourselves away for the return trek back down the boardwalk to the waiting Zodiacs. However the prospect of visiting Macquarie Island next on the itinerary spurred us on.  We are now headed south and looking forward to the southernmost stop on this voyage.
