Breakfast Icebergs

Bingo! Breakfast icebergs. We passed the first few shrouded in fog in the wee hours so they did not count, but finally at 0715hrs we spotted the first with the naked eye and altered course to check it out. Quite a grand little lady she was too. Conditions have now dropped right out and the seas are low, comfort high. That early morning fog was part of crossing the Antarctic convergence with water temperatures now down to 4 degrees and air temperatures to 3 degrees. After breakfast we were delighted to see breaching Humpback Whales, something not often seen in Antarctica. They relaxed and played as, filled with krill, they headed slowly northwards bound for warmer climes. For them the Antarctic summer sojourn is over but for us it is just starting as the nights start to dissolve. Soon we will have 24 hour days to play and to keep us warm, the Heritage polar jackets have been distributed. They are great for heading outside to shoot all those icebergs and we are seeing many more now.
