Approaching the Chatham Islands

As I write this we are about 100 miles south of the Chatham Islands and battling strong northerly winds. They have been building overnight but the forecast is for them to ease early this afternoon. We have an ETA at the Chatham’s late this afternoon and will spend the next two days there birding on the main island, then Zodiac cruising some of the outlying islands. Right now all the keen birders are on the bridge. Their dream is to see the Chatham Island Petrel and the Magenta Petrel. We have seen both on previous voyages, but so far neither has been sighted this time. Other birding has been very good with 18 different species seen before breakfast this morning.
