Amsterdam Albatross

Amsterdam Albatross

After many days at sea we were delighted to have a very rare visitor. This Amsterdam Albatross circled the ship for 2 hours as we sheltered from a westerly storm in the lee of Amsterdam Island. There are only about 140 of these birds in the world and they all nest on this island and remain in the Indian Ocean. Our male visitor came close enough for us to read the band number on his leg and through this we were able to access his life history from the French researchers on Amsterdam Island. Fascinating!
