2 Feb Voyage: Shokalskiy at Jang Bogo
We had a smooth sail through the night and passed the Drygalski Ice Tongue around 0500hrs this morning, arriving at Terra Nova Bay for breakfast while we waited for the right conditions to go ashore. Germany and Italy both have research centres in the bay that are manned during the summer months and three years ago Korea set up a state of the art complex called Jang Bogo Station. We were given a tour of the station, which houses up to 80 people over the summer season, by Dr Kim, one of 11 men who’ll be staying over the winter months. He took us to the outskirts of the compound where we enjoyed spectacular views of active volcano Mount Melbourne and the surrounding glaciers. We departed at 2200hrs for Inexpressible Island where we hope to make our next landing.
