2 Feb Voyage: Shokalskiy Campbell Calls

Campbell Island was overcast today which is often the case in this location. The group enjoyed two short documentaries about the island. The first entitled ‘The Impossible Dream – Campbell Teal Story’ told of the rediscovery and reintegration of the Campbell Island Teal in 2004. This project took nearly 30 years to re establish the species which were thought to be extinct after a 200 year absence.  The second documentary gave a detailed account of the phenomenally successful total eradication of 50,000 rats from the island by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.  The clouds lifted after lunch when some expeditioners chose to climb Mount Honey while others took the 3.5km boardwalk to the Col Lyall saddle to watch the Southern Royal Albatross.
