2 Feb Voyage: Shokalskiy Australis Dreaming

Expeditioners were woken for breakfast with the announcement that we are making good headway to Cape Adare and should cover the remaining 1,050km by early Friday morning. A documentary about the successful eradication of pests on Macquarie Island in 2013 was shown in the auditorium which put our recent visit into context. As we head towards the Antarctic Convergence, a competition has begun for passengers to guess when they think the first iceberg will be sighted. The answers so far span a two day period and to my knowledge the crew are not relenting to any form of bribery! Glimpses of sunshine peeped through the dining room port holes during the evening meal, luring passengers to the bridge where they experienced blue skies and a rainbow on the horizon.  These welcome sights are perhaps a positive omen that the Aurora Australis will light the skies tonight.
